The organisation is called The Circle Works:
three separate words. Without the definite article
the name loses much of its meaning.
The Circle Works is a Company Limited by Guarantee (no. 4511392) and a
Registered Charity (no. 1098873). Its charitable objects are ‘the advancement of
education, and the preservation and protection of mental health in Tower Hamlets
and the surrounding area, in particular, but not exclusively, by the practice and study
of the arts and reflective dialogue as methods of learning’.
The Circle Works is managed day to day by its Honorary Director, Geoffrey Court,
who is accountable to a Board of Trustees. The Honorary Director does not receive a
salary but if funds permit may be paid an annual honorarium, at the discretion of the
Trustees. He shares the responsibility of running the organisation with a voluntary
Co-worker, Heather Goodman. Associates and fellow practitioners either give their
services free or are employed on a freelance basis.
The structural and financial independence of The Circle Works is vital to its success.
It is funded by a Friends’ Scheme (through which donors contribute regularly by bank
standing order), one-off donations, fee income, and fundraising events.
